RFA WR Geronimo Allison prefers return to Packers in 2019

There is uncertainty in being a free agent after ending the previous season on injured reserve, especially with a new coaching staff coming in, but Green Bay Packers receiver Geronimo Allison has a clear preference for where he wants to play in 2019.

And it’s in Green Bay.

Allison, a restricted free agent, told Jim Owczarski of PackersNews.com that he’d prefer to return to the Packers next season.

“I feel like if God directs me down another path, I’m going to walk down that path with a mentally tough mindset and I’m going to do what I have to do,” Allison said. “But if you ask me which one do I prefer? I’m going to tell you I’m a Packer for life baby. If I can do that, if I can make that happen, that’s what I prefer.”

Allison also revealed he tore his adductor in practice before the Packers’ trip to play the New England Patriots in November last year, an injury that ended his season. He caught 20 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns in five games.

The Packers have several options with Allison’s future. They can decline to offer him a tender by March 13, which make him an unrestricted free agent. Or they could tender him at the first-round, second-round or original-round level. The lowest level, the original round, would cost the Packers $2,025,000 million in 2019, but they wouldn’t receive anything back for compensation if another team signed Allison to an offer sheet.

Bringing Allison back at the low tender looks like an easy decision for GM Brian Gutekunst. Allison developed a strong connection with Aaron Rodgers and was on pace for a breakout season before going down last season. He could be a cheap, reliable option behind Davante Adams at receiver. Expect him back in Green Bay in 2019.
