Reyes' walk-off homer propels Padres to win over Rockies

SAN DIEGO_For the record, Eric Lauer was among those who would have liked to have seen Jacob Nix complete Tuesday's gem.

He, of course, wanted to finish his own complete game bid earlier this summer.

There was simply no chance Lauer would get to chase history Thursday night.

The 23-year-old rookie returned from the disabled list with five no-hit innings, watched from the bench as the Rockies' Matt Holliday delivered a single two batters into the San Diego Padres' bullpen and celebrated on the field after Franmil Reyes' walk-off homer in a 3-2 win in the 13th inning at Petco Park.

Six relievers combined for eight innings of one-run ball and Reyes' absolved a four-error defensive effort and 16 strikeouts. Wil Myers committed three fielding gaffes in his 13th career start at third base.

The Padres are the only team in the majors without a no-hitter in their history.

Lauer finished with an unearned run allowed on two walks and a hit batter, his best effort since allowing a run in 8 1/3 innings to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his second-to-last start of the first half. He'd allowed 14 runs in 11 innings following that start and landed on the DL at the end of June with a forearm strain.

The Rockies previously battered Lauer for seven runs _ six earned _ in three innings in his major league debut.

"He's a guy who's had some really good outings for us," Padres manager Andy Green said before Thursday's game. "He's also a guy who's also gone through some typical rookie struggles at times. For him to finish the last month of the season with us and be on the mound and get the opportunity to go up against a team that he first threw against in the big leagues will be a good test."

Lauer's progression as he made his way back from a forearm strain ensured an abbreviated return to the rotation.

He'd thrown 45 pitches in his first rehab start in the California League, 61 in his second in the Pacific Coast League and needed half that many to get through Thursday's fourth inning.

He had help in lengthening the inning without giving up a hit.

Lauer hit Trevor Story with one out, walked Holliday and allowed an unearned run to score when Myers couldn't glove Ian Desmond's tapper to the third base side of the mound. Myers also booted a ball as he attempted cut in front of Freddy Galvis to make a play before Lauer struck out German Marquez to leave the bases loaded.

Lauer walked two, struck out two and hit a batter in throwing 49 of his 81 pitches for strikes.

The second hitter Trey Wingenter faced, Holliday, followed Story's leadoff walk with a single. The tying run scored when Desmond beat out a double-play ball.

Matt Strahm, Craig Stammen, Kirby Yates and Jose Castillo followed with scoreless frames and Robert Stock turned in three scoreless innings.

Austin Hedges hit his first career triple in the second inning, scoring Hunter Renfroe from first base. Galvis' ensuing sacrifice fly to center gave the Padres a 2-0 lead off Rockies right-hander arquez, who went on to strike out a career-best 13 batters in eight innings.
