ST. LOUIS _ The carryover wishful Cardinals fans had hoped would occur after their improbable comeback on Monday didn't materialize. The Cincinnati Reds took three leads and finally held onto the last one, unlike Monday, as they outdistanced the Cardinals 7-4 at Busch Stadium.
But those fans who went the distance left with hope anyway. Hard-throwing, much publicized Alex Reyes made his major debut in the ninth, pitching a perfect inning, fanning Adam Duvall on a 101 mile an hour fastball and mixing in another pitch at 101 before he left to a warm ovation.
Matt Holliday, who had entered the game hitting just .187 at Busch Stadium, homered and doubled and scored two runs. But the Cardinals couldn't deal with Reds leadoff man Billy Hamilton, who was on base four times, stole three bases and scored three runs.
The Reds snapped a 4-4 tie with three runs off Matt Bowman in the eighth. The teams will play the rubber game on Wednesday night with Jaime Garcia pitching for the Cardinals. The Cardinals need a win to even their home stand record at 3-3.
