Reward of £1,000 offered to help find racists behind sickening graffiti in Tameside

A hunt to find the people behind sickening racist graffiti in Tameside is being stepped up - with up to £1,000 being offered for information.

Police have had reports of nine incidents across Denton since January 21 and believe two people are responsible.

Graffiti has been written on a number of wooden signs in Hulme’s Wood, a defibrillator in Denton, and on a snowy windscreen in Victoria Street.

In many of the cases, the letter G has been written in a distinctive way.

Now, the charity Crimestoppers has pledged to pay up to £1,000 for information that leads to the perpetrators being arrested and charged.

Gary Murray, north west regional manager for Crimestoppers, said: “Denton, like the rest of Tameside and Greater Manchester, does not tolerate hurtful, racist and bigoted graffiti appearing in public areas and spaces.

"We take this very seriously and are determined to help find out who is involved so that we can put a stop to whoever is writing these shocking, hateful messages.

“Racist graffiti is illegal and is designed to scare and intimidate and stir up racial hatred.

"But we know how important community cohesion is, which is why I’m urging anyone with information who may not want to speak directly to the police to remember that Crimestoppers, as a charity, is here to help.

"You do have options."

The shocking graffiti has been condemned in the community, and Crimestoppers' appeal follows discussions with the council and Greater Manchester Police in an attempt to finally bring the perpetrators to justice.

Mr Murray added: “We never take personal details and no one will ever know you contacted us.

"Each and every day thousands of people trust Crimestoppers with their crime information, safe in the knowledge that they will stay 100 per cent anonymous. Always.

"So, if you have suspicions or are certain who may be responsible, please tell our charity what you know."

Anyone with information is urged to visit crimestoppers-uk.org and complete the charity's secure anonymous form.
