The 54-year-old man and 43-year-old man, both from West Derby, have been taken to be questioned.

Officers will now send the gun for forensic analysis to see if it has been involved in any shootings.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Smith from Merseyside police firearms investigation team said: "This weapon will now be subject of forensic analysis to establish whether it is linked to any incidents in Merseyside or elsewhere, and to whom it belongs.

"Every gun and other weapon removed from our streets makes those communities safer and this work continues on a daily basis.

"If you suspect that weapons are being stored, carried or used where you are, please let us know.

"You can contact us directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers but however you get the information to us, we will take action."
