Revolutionary MS Fridtjof Nansen expedition cruise liner that was due in Liverpool

A revolutionary cruise ship was due to dock in Liverpool on Tuesday, May 10 but cancelled their trip.

The striking MS Fridtjof Nansen is the second hybrid cruise ship of its kind in the world. The 140-metre ship can carry up to 528 people across 11 decks.

Unlike other cruise ships, the Nansen will not be found on exotic sun-soaked islands. It is an expedition ship that sails to some of the most remote and inhospitable corners of the globe including Antarctica.

The ship was first launched in 2018 and had its maiden voyage delayed due to the pandemic. In January 2022 it finally set sail from Hamburg.

During the first month at sea, it ran aground while in Norway however neither the ship nor any passengers were injured. It boasts three restaurants where passengers can enjoy modern takes on classic Norwegian cooking.

It is also decked out with a gym a wellness centre, an observation deck, and an infinity pool. For those lucky enough to get an exclusive cabin on board the ship they will also get their own balcony fitted with a private hot tub.

The core of the onboard experience is the Nansen Science Center, where guests and crew meet to discover a deeper understanding of the areas they explore. This is apt given the vessel gets its name from famous explorer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Nansen is most well known for leading the team that made the first crossing of Greenland in 1888.

The ship was scheduled to arrive in Liverpool on May 10 but confirmed to the ECHO the trip did not take place. According to Cruisemapper.com it is currently stationed in Norway but does have voyages planned for winter this year.

Anthony Daniels, general manager for UK & EMEA offices said: “Due to ongoing repairs, sailings of the MS Fridtjof Nansen from Liverpool this summer have been cancelled. Liverpool is a key destination for Hurtigruten Expeditions and we hope to bring MS Nansen to the city in the future.”

The cheapest expeditions start at around £2,300 and go as high as over £16,000.
