Revolut customers issued urgent warning amid new 'convincing' phishing scam

Revolut customers have been issued a warning amid a scam that is currently circulating which sees fraudsters trick you in a bid to get your personal information in a process called phishing.

According to consumer website Which?, there is a text message said to be rather "convincing" which appears to be from the baking service.

The text tells its customers that a payment has been scheduled, and in this case, it's a significant sum of money.

In a screenshot of a message, Which? have seen, an example of the fraudulent message reads: "Your payment has been scheduled for £650.00 to S ASHFIELD. To be paid on 30/07 at 13.00. If you did NOT set this up call us on 03309127584. REF: 89076."

In addition to this, others have said that they have had messages from scammers pretending to be Revolut telling them a new device has been added with one of the devices being a Samsung Galaxy S6. A third example of a scam message is that someone has attempted a transaction.

An example of the scam. (Which?)

Which? have said that "recipients of this message all mention the same number appearing in the text message". And looking into data on who-calls.me.uk, people have searched for information about the number over one thousand times with reports showing it started on July 29 2022.

A spokesperson from Revolut told Which?: "We did not send this text, and the number has been spoofed. We are a member of UK Finance which is a signatory to the SMS SenderID Protection Registry."

According to Which?, "Revolut added they are fully aware of the risk the entire industry faces of customers being targeted by scammers, and that's why it's works with cross-industry and government groups, as well as regulators, to ensure it's sharing best practice and advice on identifying scams and measures to safeguard customers from harm."

The financial technology company also said that they had controls in place to prevent scams as it issued advice to its customers.

They say that if you receive a text message from someone claiming to be from Revolut and you think it’s suspicious, or if you’re ever unsure, get in touch with through the Revolut app. If Revolut calls you about your personal account, it will always let you know in advance through the app and it will never call or text you out of the blue.

They add that if customers are ever concerned, it urges them to get in touch before completing a transaction using its secure in-app chat so that they can be confident that they’re speaking directly to Revolut.
