Revolt at Johnston Press grows

The revolt over technology at Johnston Press, which has resulted in planned industrial action at the Blackpool Gazette and Herald newspapers, could spread nationwide.

Oliver Luft reports in Press Gazette that National Union of Journalists staff from 13 chapels on daily, weekly and free Johnston Press newspapers in the Midlands and the North of England, took part in a consultative ballot of members.

The union members overwhelmingly registered opposition to Johnston's planned introduction of the Atex content management system to papers, which they fear could lead to cuts to sub-editors.

The action is a long way short of taking industrial action and is designed to put further pressure on the company, which declined to comment.
