Revised plans for student apartments at fire damaged Beeston bungalow site

Revised plans have been tabled to build student apartments at the site of a fire-damaged Beeston bungalow.

A project to demolish the building and a single-storey extension and construct accommodation providing 28 student bedrooms was given the green light last October.

However, the developer went back to the drawing board and decided to make changes to the internal layout of the scheme earmarked for Queens Road East.

Rather than creating studio apartments, shared apartments are planned instead for the site near the University of Nottingham.

Dan Lacey, director at DL Design Studio, said: “In response to further research on student accommodation in Beeston, we’ve improved the layout of the internal accommodation to provide 32 bedrooms and 10 parking spaces.

"This has been achieved without increasing the size or external appearance of the building.

“Good natural light were priorities within the concept, so we’ve improved the spread of natural light into the bedrooms and living accommodation by incorporating large windows and shallow floor plates to rooms.

"Research shows the value of good quality accommodation on mental health and academic achievements.”

The developer clarified there would be no change to the size, massing or external appearance of the approved scheme.

Mr Lacey added: “Purpose-built student accommodation in such sustainable locations will help towards providing the good quality supply needed, reducing the reliance on turning family housing into HMOs (houses in multiple occupation).

He said the location was a 10-minute walk from Beeston town centre.

Work to demolish the existing building has already started as part of the approved scheme.

The first residents are expected to move in by September this year.

The scheme is designed to target later year students.

A spokeswoman for Broxtowe Borough Council said: "A revised application has been received to construct a building for student accommodation to provide 32 bedrooms."

She said the application was due to be determined on February 14.
