Review: We tried Derry café awarded 'Northern Ireland's Best Scone'

Last week, Derry hailed the success of a café at the heart of the city winning 'Best Scones in Northern Ireland' as well as 'Best Café' in the awards launched by the Dairy Council.

The Cottage Craft Gallery and Coffee Shop from the Craft Village at the centre of Derry was announced as the winner of the competition at the award ceremony at the Merchant Hotel in Belfast.

We paid a visit this week to try their signature scones.

One of the first things that struck me as I entered The Cottage was its warmth. It is perfect as the dark winter days roll in, customers can enjoy a relaxed and delightful setting.

At almost every table that was being used, a scone being eaten. To me this was already a good sign.

The staff working at The Cottage are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I ordered a scone which comes with cream, butter and jam alongside, as well as a pot of tea.

The scone itself was very large, taking up a lot of the plate. However, it was not heavy in the slightest. It was a flavoursome, thoroughly delightful treat.

Many scones can be too stodgy or sweet, this was neither. The jam, butter and cream alongside complimented the taste of the scone well, therefore the sweetness was not overbearing.

There are a number of different scones available to suit all tastes: fruit scones, fruit and white chocolate, and of course plain.

I spoke to the staff and congratulated them on their recent award.

The staff member told me she was inundated with orders of scones since the announcement of the award, and was thrilled to see her hand-made scones flying off the shelves.

The Cottage is well worth a visit for anyone, whether or not you are calling in to try their now famous scones. The Cottage has helped to bring life to the city's Craft Village.

With an array of chutneys, oils and teas to peruse in shelves throughout The Cottage, you are sure to pick up a high quality item as well as enjoy a delicious meal.

I am thoroughly looking forward to my return, particularly for some welcoming atmosphere and warmth as the winter days roll in.
