Sony’s Xperia Z5 Premium smartphone with a 4K screen is the perfect example of a gadget that has come before its time—there isn’t enough high-resolution content to really show what the phone is capable of.
The Xperia Z5 Premium is the first smartphone with a true 4K screen. This means it has a resolution of 3,840x2,160 (same as the 4K TVs) and whopping 806 pixels per inch (PPI), which is more than twice that of other high-resolution smartphone screens. As a result, the 5.5-inch IPS Triluminos screen is sharp and the colours look rich—the phone has the highest number of pixels in a smartphone till now. However, the 4K capabilities are not available to the user all the time. While the display is actually 4K in terms of the resolution, the screen only works at that resolution when you are viewing a 4K image or video—it downscales every other content, including apps, at the Full HD (1,920x1,080) resolution. The main reason behind this is to prevent the battery from draining due to a a 4K screen.
But can you actually tell the difference in the screens in the Xperia Z5 Premium, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the Apple iPhone 6s Plus? The answer is a resounding no. With the same high-res photos side by side, it is hard to tell the difference in terms of quality between these displays. Well, you might see a difference if you really put the phone right up against your nose, but this sort of thing doesn’t really offer a genuinely enhanced experience otherwise, compared to the Note 5 or the iPhone 6s Plus.
The design immediately gives away that this is a Sony Xperia phone, with the glossy glass back and the squared-off sides. And while it is a sophisticated design, it is starting to look a bit jaded. The phone is available in Chrome and Gold colour options.
Sony has plonked the powerful Snapdragon 810 chip in this phone. Apps open smoothly, and this is a multitasking delight—there really isn’t any game that you can throw at the Xperia Z5 Premium to slow it down. But heating issues soon show up when you stress the phone. The 3,430mAh battery lasts a day with ease, and can run a couple of hours more if you aren’t watching a lot of videos or gaming.
The Xperia Z5 Premium has cutting-edge specs, and the 4K screen makes it look impressive on paper. But in reality, it doesn’t really make much difference to the experience of using a smartphone. What it does though is push up the price, something that’ll force a lot of users to look for other options.
