Review: Skid Row show Rock City that 80s music still packs a punch

Last night we got a rare flashback to the 80s at Rock City.

New Jersey hair rockers, Skid Row, could have been huge; they stormed the charts in the early 80s touring with the likes of Bon Jovi and Motley Crue.

They were the band your parents loved to hate; rebellious teens blowing off their angst through heavy metal tunes about 'youths going wild.'

Two albums in - the self-titled Skid Row (amazing) and Slave To The Grind (even more amazing) and they faded out, dwarfed by larger bands with a more dynamic back catalogue.

And the 80s was sadly coming to an end. Their music just wasn't fashionable anymore. No one wanted to hear songs about 'Big Guns' and 'Makin' A Mess.'

Things certainly weren't helped with the departure of their leading man, Sabastian Bach, in 1996. His sky rocket of a voice just couldn't be matched on albums released after the badly reviewed Subhuman Race.

But that hasn't stop founding members, guitarist Dave Sabo and bassist Rachel Bolan carrying on the baton.

Now, they may be older but their love for entertaining has never been stronger.

Former Dragonforce front man ZP Theart steps in on vocals - and what a replacement.

The 44-year-old rockers through their back catalogue of past hits as if they were his own.

Major highlights being '18 and Life' 'Monkey Business' with an extended guitar solo, 'In a Darkened Room' and 'I Remember You.'

There was also some lovely exchanges between Sabo and Bolan who show no signs of hanging up their Skid Row t-shirt just yet.

In fact Sabo wears one on stage with pride.

Encore is, of course, the almighty and punchy Youths Gone Wild, where large inflatible balloons are released into the crowd.

This is what rock was made for!
