Review - Pixies pack hits old and new into lengthy set which delivers

How does a band like the Pixies satisfy those who want to hear the classics and fans of the indie rock heroes' new output?

They play almost forty songs, that's how.

Boston's beloved band performed in Newcastle on a Saturday night, as they did on their last visit in 2016.

There was little to dislike about the set, other than for those who struggle to stand for hours on end.

The Pixies mixed old and new, with This is my fate; Catfish Kate;Los Surfers Muertos; In the Arms of Mrs. Mark of Cain and Silver Bullet all given an airing from the latest album, Beneath the Eyerie.

The classics were there too, although there was a slight mishap on Here Comes Your Man, which required a re-start. Bone Machine, Caibou and Gouge Away were also there to satisfy the seasoned Pixies fan, and those whose love lingers longer for the older hits.

Where is my Mind - predictably, was a highlight, while the best - Debaser - was saved until last, injecting the crowd with a final bit of necessary energy after a lengthy set of three-minute guitar music.

There was nothing to dislike about this show, although little surprising really. Not that there is anything wrong with a band just delivering as they should. There is little doubt the Pixies could return next year on the same day and sell out the Academy with no trouble.
