Review: Noisy Holiday at Bristol Old Vic

The clue for what to expect at this show was in the name, from loud electric guitar interludes to head banging dance sessions, the Noisy Holiday was jam-packed with fun for kids.

I've dared to take my children, aged four and nearly two, to the theatre a few times solo. I always worry before entering the venue, "Am I mad? Will this end with my son running riot and me being forced to creep out of the performance early with my kids screaming behind me?"

But those fears were quickly put to rest as we entered the Old Vic on this occasion - everything was geared up for children.

Before the show started, there were toys and drawing materials left out to keep them busy while we waited for the doors to open.

Once inside Ed Patrick (aka Kid Carpet) dived on stage with an electric energy he managed to maintain throughout the one-hour one-man (plus puppets) show.

Starting with a sing along, Kid is a master at helping even the shyest in the audience to join in.

The story saw Kid and his four friends-badger, gorilla, bear and hedgehog, all go on a holiday to Wales.

Using plastic toys, a live streaming device and several props, Kid takes the audience on a camping adventure which sees the characters end up on Barry Island.

Filled with plenty of jokes for both adults and children, the witty anecdotes of Kid and the strange and unique personalities of the animals made every member of the audience laugh out loud. I was even heckled for my shoes being too untidy.

There are plenty of chances for the little ones to get up and dance, answer questions and help out during the surreal show.

And Kid's musical talents, kept the audience involved and impressively gripped throughout the plot.

This was the fourth show produced and performed by the Bristol-based maker of nonsense rock’n’roll theatre.

Other adventures saw the crew  enter a dance contest, head out to space and  cause bedlam in Bethlehem.

For our finale, Kid invited all the children on stage where everything from break dancing to head banging was taking place.

Needless to say, it was a thoroughly entertaining experience - and not a tear in sight.

The play is at the Old Vic until Saturday April 20.
