Review: HP’s Deskjet Ink Advantage 4535 is an ideal printer for home users

The new HP Ink Advantage Deskjet 4535 is a budget printer for home users who would also like the flexibility to print photos and documents wirelessly, through a smartphone or a tablet. It comes for Rs.7,100, and offers some additional features such as a touch screen.

Modern looks, and not very large

The 4535 is a good-looking printer with a slightly more curved design than just straight lines. The slanting front panel looks different, and the black matte finish is not very difficult to maintain. The slight angle on the front makes the control panel more easily accessible to users. There are no physical buttons except the power button. Everything else is controlled through a 2.2-inch touchscreen.

The printer’s compact size (455mm wide and 365mm long) makes it easy to set up on a table or a shelf. The paper tray, feeder, control panel and the cartridge slots can be accessed from the front and the printer can be placed in any corner. The Deskjet 4535 comes with a built-in scanner and copier too.

Printing on the go

The Deskjet 4535 is ideal for households with multiple devices. It plugs into the home Wi-Fi network and supports WiFi Direct and ePrint features. WiFi Direct works by creating a wireless network between a smartphone and the printer. The HP ePrint function is easy to configure and use, and works in two ways. The first is where the printer generates its own unique email address, and you simply need to email a document or image to that email address and the print will emerge. However, this does require you to remember the email ID, because it isn’t really easy to remember. The second method is to use the free ePrint app on iOS and Android devices, by accessing emails, photos, documents and files through the app itself. We believe the latter is a lot more convenient, because it automatically detects the printer on the network.

Paper handling

The paper tray is placed on the front, which makes loading paper easy. It can accommodate 100 sheets at a time. The tray has these adjustable sliders for alignment. There is no dedicated output tray. HP has added a flexible plastic support on the front that pops out by itself every time the printer receives a print command.

Performance

The printer uses HP Thermal Inkjet cartridges. It comes with a black and white cartridge and a tricolour ink cartridge. The black cartridge lasts 120 pages and the colour one lasts around 100 pages. The price of each cartridge is Rs.549. The print speed is good, where a colour print at highest resolution takes one minute to print a page with text and image. The B&W print of the same page took about 30 seconds. At draft mode, it can print about 8 colour sheets with text and document in a minute and about 18 B&W sheets with text and document in a minute. Full page photos look rich, while black levels in text looks crisp and at par with any laser printer.

The scanner is perfect for scanning documents and colour photos while the copier can copy 50 sheets at a time in colour at 600x300dpi. It isn’t the highest but the copy quality is good enough for personal use, documentation and school projects. Copying takes time, especially if you are making a colour copy.

There is a quiet mode, which reduces printing noise, but also reduces the speed a bit.

The Deskjet 4535 comes with auto duplex which makes it easier to print documents on both sides of the page. This feature is impressive considering that most entry-level printers don’t have duplex or manual duplex where you have to manually turn the pages.

Verdict

The Deskjet 4535 is an affordable multi-function printer with plenty of useful features. It is ideal for home users, more so because of the low-cost cartridges.
