Review: Grandpa's Great Escape, Motorpoint Arena

There are some who say David Walliams is the new Roald Dahl.

Certainly, my seven-year-old devours the books, as I did with The Twits, BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In fact he reads them over and over - sometimes in just a day.

So to see one of his favourites, Grandpa's Great Escape, brought to life on a huge stage in an arena was a no-brainer.

The tale has many of the elements fans of Walliams will know and love; the clear distinction between the goodies and baddies (who often take on Pantomime-esque characteristics), a young hero, the family unit at the middle of it all and of course Raj with his bargain basement corner shop.

The first ever stage adaptation of Grandpa's Great Escape, the bestselling children's book by David Walliams, is to tour UK arenas this Christmas. (Trevor Leighton)

Grandpa (played by Nigel Planer AKA Neil from The Young Ones) still thinks he's living in World War Two and his grandson Jack can only really communicate with him if he pretends to be 'Squadron Leader'.

The pair's unique bond is nearly torn apart when Grandpa is taken into a nursing home, but Jack stages a dramatic Colditz-style escape and sets him free - complete with a dozen pensioners and a rope made out of old knickers.

There's something for everyone here. Parents will love the fact the show is set in the 80s, complete with matching fashion and music, and the special effects will really wow the kids. Grandpa's ride in a firing tank which drove out into the centre of the arena left them open-mouthed, as did the Spitfire flying from the roof at the end of the show.

Whether or not Walliams will really find himself up there with Roald Dahl remains to be seen, but his heart-warming tales have certainly wormed their way into our family's life.
