Review: Gentleman's Dub Club at their absolute best at Bristol's SWX

Like a fine wine, Gentleman's Dub Club only seem to be getting better with age.

Next year the rambunctious Leeds lads celebrate 15 years of tearing up festivals and venues together but the love and passion for what they do is still evidently there - perhaps more so than ever.

Tonight at SWX (Saturday, February 22) they're at their absolute best, providing the perfect soundtrack to Saturday night for the sold out crowd with their armory of feel-good bangers.

After a top support set from fast-rising Bristol rapper Gardna, the smartly-dressed dub and reggae outfit kick off with Music Is The Girl I Love, a song which instantly transports you to far warmer climates than those of Bristol on a chilly February evening.

The atmosphere is electric in the Nelson Street venue from the off but it's got more to give, with the festival veterans knowing how to raise it gradually throughout the set.

A reload of Dancing In The Breeze gets the crowd even more hyped and lead singer Jonathan Scratchley knows what to say in between songs to add to the elation of the 1,000 or so in attendance.

"Bristol is our second home," he declares, before later going on to praise the "special energy in this city".

Rather than it sounding like platitudes Scratchley reels off at every night of the tour it feels genuine, and the fans are most definitely reciprocating the love, greeting each outpouring of affection with deafening cheers.

Support act Gardna joins the band on stage for Rudeboy, allowing him to show off his impressive flow to a larger crowd, before a drum & bass edit of fan favourite Fire makes SWX at 9pm feel more like Motion in the early hours of the morning, while showing off the group's musicianship.

An encore which includes an extended version of High Grade, their biggest track and one which will never cease to cause complete pandemonium on the dance floor, ensures everyone leaves on the kind of high few bands can cause more than Gentleman's Dub Club.

It doesn't matter how many times you've seen Gentleman's Dub Club before, they simply won't disappoint. If they're on the bill at a festival you're going to this summer, make sure you see them.
