Review: Dragons Dogma:Dark Arisen gives Laura a chance to explore the much loved open world on Nintendo Switch

THE much-loved RPG has been ported over to the Nintendo Switch giving a new generation the keys to the open world of Gransys. There’s no better time to give this cult title a chance especially with the upcoming Netflix anime series in the works.

If you haven’t had your full dragon combat fix from Game of Thrones, you’ll enjoy this world of dragons, four-headed hydrae and flying griffins.

After a dragon takes your heart and leaves you alive, you are an “Arisen”, someone destined to kill the dragon and save the world from an apocalypse. Your character can be customised both in appearance and also with a line-up of specialised vocations to sink your teeth into.

You aren’t alone in your quest. You have Pawns available to help you, three AI companions, who work out how best to help your playstyle using their own skills. Cleverly, the game allows you to swap Pawns with others online using Nintendo accounts and you don’t need a Nintendo Online subscription.

It felt a bit overwhelming to be thrown straight into combat with all sorts of magical creatures. I did think I could have done with an explanation as to why I was facing a Chimera, which I’ve only recently learned is the correct term for part lion, part goat, part snake hybrid.

Luckily, where the game lacks in narrative it makes up for in combat.

If you want something to get stuck into over hours of exploratory game play, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is worth your money.
