Reversing type 2 diabetes: Dr Peter Brukner's mission to defeat diabetes

A health scare a few years ago inspired elite sports medico Dr Peter Brukner's mission to defeat diabetes.

A former team doctor for the Australian Olympic and cricket teams as well as AFL clubs Collingwood and Melbourne and Liverpool in the English Premier League, Dr Brukner wrote the book A Fat Lot of Good and this year launched the Defeat Diabetes app.

He is focused on busting the dietary myths he says are making Australians fatter and sicker, and fuelling our type 2 diabetes epidemic.

In this video, Dr Brukner recounts his own diet and lifestyle changes.

"I stopped eating all sugars and starches - like rice, pasta, potato and bread - and I went back to eating the way my parents and grandparents had eaten - meat and fish and eggs and dairy, fruit and veg and nuts. No processed food. Just good, old-fashioned, sensible food," he says.

As part of our Silent Assassin series on the diabetes danger facing millions of Australians, we're partnering with Dr Brukner to offer our readers free access to his Defeat Diabetes app.
