Reverse running back in Manchester

A running race with a difference is coming back(wards) to Manchester. The backwards running championships will be held at Heaton Park in August.

Organisers hope to mirror the success of last year's inaugural championships which attracted runners of all ages.

Backwards races for men, women and over-40s will be held, along with a fun run for children.

The Forever Manchester campaign, run by the Community Foundation, has been chosen as the event's charitable cause.

The charity helps people to access grants to set up and run projects in disadvantaged communities.

The event is being organised by backwards running converts James Bamber and Sally Raynes, who are campaigning for the craze to be an Olympic sport at the 2020 games.

Bamber told the Manchester Evening News: "Backwards running is the best-kept secret in exercise and could well witness the next big boom in sport and fitness.

"It may sound like a daft thing to do. You may get laughed at or you may even fall over a few times. But if you can get past initial trepidation there are amazing benefits to be reaped."

The championships will be held on Sunday August 14.
