Tobacco worth more than €7.7million was seized at Dublin Port as a result of routine profiling on Tuesday.
Revenue officers seized over 3.5 tonnes of raw tobacco that was illegally smuggled into the country.
The smuggled tobacco has an estimated retail value of over €2.1 million, which represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €1.7 million.
The sizeable amount was discovered in a consignment that had originated in Germany and it was concealed in boxes labelled as ‘wood flooring’.
In a separate operation that occurred on Sunday, Revenue officers seized over 1.9 million worth of illicit cigarettes.
This particular haul had an estimated retail value of over €1.3 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €1 million.
The illegal cigarettes branded ‘Platinum' were discovered with the assistance of Revenue’s Mobile X-ray Scanner.
These smokes were concealed in a consignment that had originated in Dubai.
Investigations into both seizures are ongoing as Revenue continues to target the shadow economy which thrives upon the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.
