Revenue seize thousands in cash and cigarettes in Dublin Airport and north inner city

Revenue detector dog Kelly helped officials to seize 2,500 cigarettes and around €5,000 in cash on Thursday.

The seizure was made following a search under warrant of a home in the north inner city.

The unstamped cigarettes, branded "Excellence", had a retail value of over €1,300 representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €1,200.

Revenue officers from were granted a three month cash detention order  at Dublin District Court today to allow for further investigations to be carried out.

A 61-year-old woman was arrested at the scene by gardai and was brought to Store Street Garda Station.

She was charged, bailed and will appear before Dublin District Court at a later date under section 78 Finance Act 2005.

In a separate operation at Dublin Airport on Tuesday, officials seized over €13,000 in cash from a man in his 40s who was travelling to Milan in Italy.

The cash, composed of Euro, Dollars and British Pound Sterling, was found in the hand luggage of the Libyan national.

Revenue officers seized the cash suspecting it to be the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity.

A three month cash detention order was granted at Dublin District Court the same day.

Investigations are ongoing in both operations.
