Revenue seize over €80,000 worth of drugs bound for Dublin city centre

Revenue officers have seized over €80,000 worth of drugs this afternoon that were bound for Dublin city centre.

Officers seized 3.9kgs of herbal cannabis and 10.1kgs of khat with a combined estimated street value of €83,050 at the Portlaoise Mail Centre.

Khat is a plant-based stimulant that makes users feel more alert, happy and talkative.

The drugs were concealed in two separate parcels from Kenya and Thailand.

One parcel was labelled "clothing" and the other as a "wedding gift".

Revenue detector dog Sam assisted in the discovery of the drugs.

Officials said investigations into the find are ongoing with a view to prosecution.

A Revenue spokesman said: "These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting drug importations.
