Revenue seize more than five million cigarettes following search at Dublin Port

More than 5.5 million cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officials following a search of a trailer at Dublin Port.

The search was carried out at the port yesterday with the help of ace detector dog Kelly.

The smuggled fags were labelled as "solar panels" and arrived on a vessel from Rotterdam.

They were branded "Rothmans" and originated from Ukraine.

They have an estimated retail value of €2.9 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €2.5 million.

A Revenue spokesman said investigations into the find are ongoing.

He said: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the smuggling of illegal tobacco products into the State.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
