Revenue seize almost 235,000 cigarettes at Dublin Airport

Revenue seized almost 235,000 cigarettes at Dublin Airport yesterday.

The cigarettes, which were branded Benson & Hedges, were found concealed in 17 boxes that were marked as "metal transistors".

They had come via Amsterdam on a flight from China.

According to Revenue, the cigarettes had a value of €126,000 and count as a €110,000 loss to the Exchequer.

A Revenue spokesman said: "Yesterday (05/12/2019), as part of routine profiling, Revenue officers in Dublin Airport seized 234,600 cigarettes.

"The cigarettes branded ‘Benson & Hedges’ were found concealed in 17 boxes described as ‘metal transistors’ which had arrived via Amsterdam on a flight from China. The cigarettes had an approximate value of €126,000 and represent a loss to the Exchequer of €110,000.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the illegal importation, supply and sale of tobacco products in the shadow economy.
