Revenue seize 87,000 cigarettes after vehicle stopped in Drumcondra, north Dublin

Tens of thousands of cigarettes have been seized after a vehicle was stopped in north Dublin.

The cigarettes, which were marked 'Marlboro', had Moldovan tax stamps and were found in Drumcondra.

Revenue discovered the illegal items yesterday during a routine operation.

The 87,000 cigarettes have a value of €46,500, and would represent a loss of €40,500 to the exchequer.

A Revenue spokesman said: "Yesterday (27/01/2020), as a result of routine operations, and following the search of a vehicle in Drumcondra, Dublin, Revenue officers seized a total of 87,000 cigarettes.

"The ‘Marlboro’ cigarettes bore Moldovan tax stamps and have a value of over €46,500, representing a loss to the exchequer of approximately €40,500.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the importation, supply and sale of illegal tobacco products in the shadow economy.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Confidential Phone Number 1800 295 295."
