Revenue seize 4 tonnes of tobacco worth more than €2.4 million at Dublin Port

More than four tonnes of tobacco were seized by Revenue officers at Dublin Port earlier this week.

The discovery was made as a result of routine profiling at the port on Tuesday.

The smuggled tobacco, which has estimated retail value of more than €2.4 million, represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €2 million.

The huge haul was discovered concealed in boxes labelled as ‘printing paper’ which had originated in Germany.

A Revenue spokeswoman said investigations into the find are ongoing.

She added: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
