Revenue detector dog Kelly finds over 40,000 cigarettes, alcohol, and tobacco at Dublin Port

Over 40,000 cigarettes worth almost €23,000 and 308 litres of alcohol were amongst the items sniffed out by detector dog Kelly at Dublin Port today.

The clever pooch also discovered 2.6kgs of tobacco following the search of two vans which arrived via Hollyhead.

The 44,000 smuggled cigarettes, branded "Marlboro", "Rothmans", "King", "Sobraine", and "Dunhill" and tobacco branded "Old Holborn", "Golden Virginia" and "George Karelias & Sons" represented a loss to the Exchequer of €19,630.

The smuggled alcohol had an estimated value of €6,700, representing a loss to the Exchequer of €3,938.

The drivers of the vans were originally from Bulgaria.

A Revenue spokesman said: “Investigations are ongoing.

“These seizures are part of Revenue's on-going operations targeting smuggling and the supply and sale of alcohol and cigarettes in the shadow economy.

“If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling or the sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295.”
