The Revenue Department says people who deal with its offices will no longer have to provide copies of their ID card and household registration book.
The new policy took effect immediately after the announcement by department director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas was published in the Royal Gazette on Friday.
The government has been pressing all agencies to reduce paper usage in the spirit of Thailand 4.0, the national strategy intended to promote the digital economy. However, most still require copies of ID cards or other personal documents for nearly every interaction with a citizen. If someone does not bring a photocopy with them, the offices will charge them to make copies.
Friday’s announcement from the Revenue Department said that if officials decide for some reason that copies of ID cards or household registration books are needed, copying will be free of charge.
A copy of an ID card is still needed from anyone who asks another person to contact the agency on his or her behalf, it added.
