Revellers kick off 2022 with Dee Dip at Crossmichael

More than 100 revellers kicked off 2022 by taking part in the Dee Dip on Saturday.

The annual tradition sees people brave the cold waters at Crossmichael on New Year’s Day - although this time around there was no ice in sight.

Organiser Jim McLelland said: “It was absolutely fantastic. I think there must have been around 100 people there, a lot of them who I hadn’t seen before.

“Normally on New Year’s morning you’re hugging people or shaking hands but there was none of that, it was quite strange.”

The longest anyone stayed in the water was Liz Hunter at around 16 and a half minutes.

A bucket collection raised £144 to help pay for Christmas presents for kids in Crossmichael and the old folk’s community fund.

The total will be boosted further thanks to people who sponsored Jim and his pals to stay in the water.

Also taking part was Crossmichael’s Suzy Rook, who was completing her Cold Water Challenge for Cancer Research UK.

She had taken to the water every day for 38 days in a row.
