Revellers in ghoulish costumes celebrate first Halloween without Covid curbs in 2 years

Revellers braved the cold and rainy weather to enjoy the first full Halloween night out for many in two years.

Party-goers were pictured dressed up in ghoulish costumes in cities across the UK, with crowds seen in London, Leeds and Portsmouth.

While some opted for the classic blood-spattered and satanic themed costumes, there were also more unusual choices on display.

At least one reveller was seen sporting an enormous pumpkin while one group was pictured dressed in Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars styled clothing.

The party atmosphere was seen in a number of cities across England, including London as well as Portsmouth and Leeds.

And it was a wet and windy night for many as temperatures plunged and much of the country was lashed by torrential rain, with weather warnings in place for many regions.

The night was the first chance for many to properly enjoy the October 31 festivities at pubs and clubs, after Covid ravaged the country last year, forcing many indoor venues to shut.

Nightclubs were only allowed to re-open again in July across England as most restrictions put in place to halt the spread of the disease were lifted in the country.

Last year revellers were seen dressed up to celebrate Halloween as a final blow-out before a national lockdown was introduced the following week.

Drinkers in fancy costumes were seen in various cities from Birmingham, Leeds to Newcastle.

The lockdown that followed saw bars, pubs and restaurants all shut except for delivery or take-away services.

The 2021 celebrations comes as the most recent government data shows that Covid cases remain high, and there were 38,009 new infections reported on Sunday.

No new Covid restrictions have been planned despite the high number of cases in recent weeks.

The British Medical Association said earlier the "time is now" for Plan B, which would include mandatory masks, vaccine passports and more working from home.

And SAGE warned "earlier intervention would reduce the need for more stringent, disruptive, and longer-lasting measures”.

But the Prime Minister told journalists at the G20 summit in Rome: "Yes it’s true that cases are high, but they do not currently constitute any reason to move to Plan B.

"And that's I think agreed amongst absolutely everybody except I think possibly the Labour Party of last week, whenever it was.

"But never mind."

Labour called for Plan B to be activated last weekend after the Tories accused the party of flip-flopping on the issue.
