Revealed: why Declan Rice & Felipe Anderson missed out for West Ham against Southampton

Declan Rice and Felipe Anderson were omitted from the West Ham starting lineup for their game against Southampton as a result of being struck down by illness, football.london understands.

Both players caught a virus late on in the week and were not considered for the match against Ralph Hasenhuttl's side at London Stadium.

It is only the second game that Anderson has missed in the Premier League all season long while Rice has completed 90 minutes in every Premier League game since September 16 when he returned for the Hammers first win of the season against Everton.

Youngster Grady Diangana was handed the chance to impress as he replaced Anderson, while Rice absence meant Pedro Obiang started as the midfield screen in front of the back four.

Robert Snodgrass was also absent for the match this afternoon as the club reluctantly decided not to appeal against his one-match ban for alleged abuse towards a UK anti-doping official at the Rush Green training ground back in February.

Snodgrass has also picked up ten yellow cards this season, his most recent coming against Spurs last weekend, though the cut-off for the two-game suspension that triggers was back on matchweek 32.
