Revealed: This Newcastle city centre roundabout is the most dangerous in the North East

This Newcastle city centre roundabout has been identified as the most dangerous in the North East.

The Durant Road roundabout (A193/A167) close to Northumbria University saw more crashes than any other in the region last year.

Eight collisions happened on the junction, which connects the central motorway to routes into the city centre and towards Byker.

Sixteen vehicles were involved in the incidents, with eight people sustaining injuries.

The second most dangerous was the A193 / B1312 / Shields Road West roundabout system.

There were six crashes in that area over the 12 month period - involving a total of 11 vehicles and injuring six people.

The roundabout outside Travelodge Newcastle Seaton Burn saw six crashes, injuring a total of six people, while there were six crashes at the A186 / A191 crossroads roundabout by Hadrian's Wall in Denton Burn, injuring a total of six people.

Nationally, the roundabout with the worst record in the year to June 2018 was the Redbridge Roundabout in London.

There were 18 accidents there - involving a total of 36 vehicles and injuring 21 people.

A Newcastle City Council spokesperson said: “We’re committed to making Newcastle one of the safest and easiest cities to get around.

"A key part of our plans is addressing road safety on major junctions and we’ve secured funds to deliver improvements to notorious junctions such as Haddricks Mill and Blue House, as well as having completed works at Cowgate junction and the Westmorland Road junction in the city centre.

"The Newbridge Street/Durant Road junction is a key junction for accessing the central motorway and improvements are under development for this junction as part of our air quality proposals.

"These are subject to cabinet approval and further public consultation, with a final plan presented to the government by the end of the year.”
