Revealed: This is the most dangerous time to be on the roads in Edinburgh

November weekdays between 5pm and 6pm are the most dangerous time to be on Edinburgh’s roads, data has revealed.

The analysis is based on more than 2,000 collisions which took place in the city in 2016 and 2017, resulting in a driver, passenger, pedestrian or someone else being hurt or killed.

Some 188 of those incidents happened in November, which means there were an average of 22 collisions during an average week that month – more than any other month, despite it having just 30 days.

September was the second most dangerous month, followed by February. Meanwhile, April emerged as the safest month, with just 136 casualty-causing accidents in total – or 16 per week.

Hours of the day

The analysis also looked at the hours of the day when accidents were most likely to occur.

Some 525 – or more than one in four – happened in the evening rush-hour, between 4pm and 7pm.

Of those, 172 were between 4pm and 5pm, 202 were between 5pm and 6pm, and 151 were between 6pm and 7pm.

Days of the week

There was less variation between days of the week – although collisions were significantly less common at weekends, and Monday was the safest week-day.

Wednesday and Friday (with 363 incidents each) were the most common days for someone to be hurt or killed on the roads.

Thursday (333) was next, followed by Tuesday (301), Monday (293), and Saturday (234).
There were just 163 casualty-causing collisions on Sundays.

UK-wide

The data is published by the Department for Transport and based on official police records.

Of the 2,050 collisions in Edinburgh in the database, 15 resulted in at least one person being killed, while a further 295 resulted in serious injury.

Across Great Britain as a whole, there were 266,603 casualty-causing accidents in 2016 and 2017.

November was the most dangerous month, accounting for 24,699, while Friday (43,824) was the most dangerous day of the week.
