Revealed: These 10 roads are the most dangerous in the North East

Ten people were killed on the North East's most dangerous roads in just over 10 months this year.

More than 406 collisions took place on the 10 most accident-hit carriageways in the region.

Figures obtained from Northumbria Police through a freedom of information request show the A1 is the location where the most incidents were recorded between January this year and the end of October.

In total, there were 77 collisions on one of the region's busiest roads.

In April, a man died in hospital after crashing into a HGV on the A1 near Felton, Northumberland.

The 28-year-old had been travelling on the southbound carriageway in a BMW at around 1.30am when his vehicle collided with the HGV which was travelling northbound.

Emergency services attended and the road was closed in both directions for several hours.

Three months later, a 25-year-old died after his Volkswagen Golf veered off the carriageway.

The driver was cut free from the vehicle but was pronounced dead at the scene.

In September, Thomas Allen was killed in a crash on the A1.

The 38-year-old was driving a Nissan Note on the A1 northbound at Belford when his vehicle collided with a Toyota Auris that was travelling in the opposite direction.

The crash prompted a large scale emergency response including two air ambulances, paramedics, fire crews and police.

Mr Allen, from Throckley, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man and a woman, who were in the Auris, were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The figures also revealed there were 50 crashes on the A193 and A189, 44 collisions on the A167 and A186 and 39 on the A19.

Northumbria Police said it is working to make roads safer, and highlighted the role of excessive speeds in many road accidents.

A spokesperson said: “Northumbria Police is committed to making our roads safer for everyone.

"Excessive and inappropriate speed kills, the careless and dangerous actions of one motorist can have devastating effects on the lives of others.

"Speed limits are there to protect and save lives. It must be remembered that the limit is exactly that, a limit, and not a target. If convicted of a speeding offence then you could face disqualification and a fine of up to £1000."
