Revealed: The shocking speed one driver reached on the Western Bypass

A speeding motorist has been clocked driving at 91mph on the A1 Western Bypass during the first month of lockdown.

The incident is just the latest in a string of extreme speeds reached recently by dangerous drivers.

And it follows a string of police warnings that motorists are risking lives by exploiting the region's quieter roads.

The 91mph speed was reached on a stretch which is subject to a 50mph speed limit.

It came to light in a Freedom of Information request to Northumbria Police, which revealed that in the first month of lockdown speeding offences fell year-on-year by around 70%.

From March 24 until April 22 this year, the force issued 1,612 fixed penalty notices for speeding.

In the same period in 2019, there were 6,163.

However, the reduction is lower than that seen by neighbouring Durham Constabulary which said the number of speeding offences fell by almost 99% in the same period.

Northumbria Police has now reiterated its message for the minority of drivers misbehaving to stop endangering the public.

“There is no place for irresponsible or reckless driving in our region and I would urge motorists to demonstrate the respect for their communities they have shown during recent weeks," said Chief Inspector Sam Rennison, of Northumbria Police motor patrols department, as he backed a national safety initiative last month.

The force recently revealed that on average, drivers are travelling on average 5mph faster than before lockdown.

Among the worst offenders was a driver caught doing 97mph on a 50mph stretch of the Felling bypass.

The public are now able to report dangerous driving using dash-cam footage via Northumbria Police's ‘Report an Incident’ section on its website.
