Revealed: The reason why Newcastle's 'blatant' penalty was not given by VAR

Newcastle United were denied what looked like a clear penalty for James Tarkowski's high boot on Sean Longstaff at Burnley.

The controversial call was the major talking point from the first half at Turf Moor - with the initial call reviewed by VAR.

Tarkowski's boot was at head height after Dwight Gayle's shot was saved by Bailey Peacock-Farrell and to the amazement of the Newcastle players, there was no overturning it after a VAR call.

At half-time, Sky presenter David Jones shared the official reason for the penalty not being given, via the Professional Game Match Officials Board.

He said: "What we have been told by the PGMOL is that Tarkowski has played the ball first and then Longstaff has stooped and put his head into that area."
