Revealed: The North East speed cameras that have caught the most drivers in 2019

These are the North East speed cameras that have caught the most drivers so far this year.

Almost 17,000 motorists have been caught speeding by six mobile cameras since the start of 2019, according to figures obtained from Northumbria Police.

A camera on Ponteland Road, which sits between the A191 Etal Lane roundabout and Springfield roundabout, has snared 5,027 motorists for exceeding the 30mph speed limit.

It came into operation in January last year and made more than £600,000 in fines within 12 months.

The second most prolific speed camera is on the A184 Felling Bypass from Heworth to Whitemare Pool.

A total of 2,836 drivers were caught breaking the speed limit by the mobile camera.

On the A167, 2,723 motorists were fined after being caught speeding on Stamfordham Road between the A1 and Silver Lonnen junctions.

A mobile camera on the A690 at Stoneygate, Houghton, has been activated 2,095 times this year, followed by one on the A690 South of Houghton Cut, which caught 2,070 motorists.

On Kier Hardy Way at Southwick, 2,043 drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit.

Chief Inspector Dave Guthrie, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrol’s department, said the force is committed to making our roads as safe as possible.

He added: "Speed limits are in place for a reason and speed cameras are just one of the many deterrents we use to ensure motorists are not driving above the limit.

"The presence of a speed camera, whether that is a mobile van or a stationary camera, deters speeding and helps improve road safety across the force area.

“Statistics show that drivers travelling at excess speed is one of the major contributory factors in serious and fatal road traffic collisions.

“We personally see the devastating effect the loss of a loved one at the hands of a speeding motorist has on family and friends.

"This is something we take very seriously and we will continue to actively enforce speed limits across our Force area when it is appropriate to do so.”
