Revealed: The Newcastle streets plagued by dog poo

Parklands ward has been revealed as Newcastle's worst hotspot for dog fouling.

A ChronicleLive Freedom of Information (FOI) request has uncovered the location of reports or service requests received by Newcastle City Council in 2018.

Parklands ward - the northern part of Gosforth either side of the Great North Road and including the Garden Village - came out on top of the league of shame.

The FOI request shows the authority received 36 reports in relation to dog fouling from the ward in 2018, six more than second-placed Walkergate.

Parklands councillor Robin Ashby believes the ward's location on the edge of the city, and the "propensity" of the community to report instances are reflected in the Newcastle's highest figure.

He believes it is just a "minority" giving dog owners in the area a "bad name", and says the reduction of council-provided bins has played a part in the number of reports.

Coun Ashby said: "One issue we have complained about frequently as councillors is we don't have enough bins. We have about a third of the number we used to have.

"Part of these complaints will be about people doing the first step and bagging the mess, but not the second step of taking it to a bin.

"We have made sure that there are bins at strategic points in the ward, but it is a big area to cover for 30 bins.

"The vast majority of our dog owners are responsible - you can see them picking up the mess.

"But there are a small minority who don't and give other owners a bad name. They need to be reminded over and over again."

Lemington, Ouseburn, Walker, Blakelaw, Denton, Kenton, and South Heaton wards also featured highly on the list.

Newcastle underwent significant changes to its wards in early May 2018, including the creation of "new wards". The table shows the relevant ward name at the time the record was made.
