Revealed: The long negotiations it took to sign Joelinton and how the deal was held up

Newcastle United have finally confirmed the arrival of Brazilian striker Joelinton - four months after making the initial enquiry for the 22-year-old.

The Magpies were keen to do a deal for the Hoffenheim forward earlier in the window, but could not buy any players until after June 30 - when Rafa Benitez's "final say" clause in his contract ended.

Benitez did not reject the idea at first but he was not convinced about ploughing a big fee into the striker knowing that other areas needed improving.

But without knowing whether he would stay on or not, United could not make signings until there was clarification on who would be their new boss.

A struggle to replace Benitez immediately then followed but Newcastle chiefs remained keen on the former Sport Club do Recife star.

Given Benitez's departure was not confirmed until June 24 and it then Newcastle's search for a replacement and battle with Sheff Wed to win Steve Bruce's services took another three weeks, this caused major complications on the recruitment front.

However, Bruce liked the idea of Joelinton straight away and gave his say so on the move as the head coach can see the club's serious lack of options at the moment.

Another Brazilian player United have been offered the chance to sign is Marrony da Silva.

The 20-year-old is believed to have a £31million release clause but head of recruitment Steve Nickson is aware of the young South American.

Nickson has been working closely with Bruce in the last few days since being appointed and the Toon boss is pushing to get another four deals over the line before the window shuts.

Out of contract striker Andy Carroll remains on the club's list but he must proved his fitness to Bruce after ankle surgery.
