Revealed: The deadliest day in Leeds so far during the coronavirus outbreak

A week ago Leeds saw its worst day for coronavirus deaths so far.

NHS England states that 11 people lost their lives at Leeds hospitals on April 15 after contracting the virus - the most deaths recorded in the city on a single day.

Every 24 hours new deaths are recorded, and some date back to days before, adding to previous totals for those given days.

According to the latest figures, 1,039 people have lost their lives at Yorkshire hospitals and 134 of those deaths occurred in Leeds.

10 deaths have been recorded for Thursday, April 16, while eight died back on April 7 - the third worst day so far.

There are now 129,044 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the UK, including 958 in Leeds.

The Office for National Statistics has also revealed that another 121 people lost their lives at care homes in the city.

However, more than 250 people are recovering at home with their loved ones after they were treated for coronavirus at hospitals run by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Last month, staff at Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital cleared dozens of beds, closed wards and suspended all non-urgent procedures to prepare for an influx of coronavirus patients.

The hospitals have also set up 'hot and cold wards' so patients who have tested positive for Covid-19 do not come into contact with other patients.

More than 129,000 people in the UK, including 7,018 in Yorkshire, have tested positive for Covid-19 and 17,337 have died.
