Revealed: The Bury neighbourhood which had more Covid-19 deaths in June than nearly everywhere in England

A neighbourhood in Bury had one of the highest numbers of coronavirus deaths in England during June, new figures have revealed.

A total of eight people lost their lives in the suburban villages of Walmersley and Limefield to the north of the town last month.

The figure is the highest in Greater Manchester, according to a newly released map showing how deaths involving Covid-19 were distributed around the country.

No other neighbourhood in the Greater Manchester region had more than five deaths during June.

And only four other neighbourhoods in England and Wales - Starbeck (near Harrogate), Bishop Auckland Central & West (County Durham), Hengrove (in Bristol) and Kearsney, River & Whitfield (Dover), had more Covid-19 deaths than Walmersley and Limefield last month.

The map by the Office for National Statistics shows the number of deaths in areas known as Middle Layer Super Output Areas, which are areas about the same size as council wards but do not match ward boundaries. There are around 7,200 of them in England and Wales.

Walmerlsey and Limefield is roughly equivalent to the Bury council ward of Moorside and the two villages are linked together by the A56 Walmersley Road heading north towards Ramsbottom.

In most neighbourhoods in England, the number of deaths in June was lower than in May and April.

However, Walmersley and Limefield bucked the trend with June being the deadliest month in the district. There were six deaths in both May and April and there have been 22 deaths in total.

It is not yet known if the spike in deaths seen in June were linked to a specific place in the area.
