Revealed: The awkward situation Newcastle United are in with Salomon Rondon after handing him official player of the year award

Newcastle United are facing the awkward situation of releasing their official club player of the year in Salomon Rondon next week.

With no permanent deal in place, Rondon will be back on West Brom's books from next week following the final game of the Premier League season at Fulham.

The number 9 has joined a list of Toon greats such as Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, Andy Cole, Kevin Keegan and Shay Given by picking up the annual best player gong at St James' Park .

However, with his fee potentially heading north of £20million if West Bromwich Albion were to be promoted, Rondon may not have a future on Tyneside - especially if agent fees and wage demands tot up to an astronomical overall package.

A lower fee of £16.5million plus fees could yet be applicable if West Brom flunk in the end of season play-offs.

A piece in the club programme confirmed the news that Rondon had been crowned player of the season.

It read: "Rondon has been involved in 44% (which went up after his equaliser vs Liverpool) of United's goals.

"He takes over the gong from skipper Jamaal Lascelles and is he first forward to win it since Alan Shearer in the 2002/03 campaign.

"We've added Rondon's name to the list of previous winners."

When quizzed about his future, Rondon said: "It’s a difficult moment for me because I felt the support for all the team and for me, every game.

"So, I have to say thank you to the supporters, the staff, Rafa and the team mates

"I don’t know what’ll happen in the future."
