Revealed: The 10 areas with the most current coronavirus cases in Newcastle and North Tyneside

An area of Newcastle's East End is currently the biggest coronavirus-hotspot in the city.

Public Health England data has revealed there were more cases in Shieldfield and Heaton Park than any other area last week.

Analysis of the data suggests the virus is more present in the East End than the West End, while areas popular with students have more cases.

Like the rest of the North East, cases in Newcastle are surging, with infections more than doubling last week.

Current figures show there are 30.4 cases per 100,000 people in the city.

In the seven days up to September 4, 92 people tested positive - up from 40 the week before.

In North Tyneside, while the infection rate is lower, cases are increasing at a faster rate.

Currently there are 23.1 cases per 100,000 people, although the number of cases increased from 19 to 48 last week.

But of the 10 most infected areas North of the River Tyne, just two from North Tyneside currently feature.

These are ten areas of Newcastle and North Tyneside with the most coronavirus cases confirmed in the week ending September 4.

* Shieldfield and Heaton Park - Seven cases

* Percy Main - Six

* Byker - Six

* City Centre and Arthur's Hill - Six

* Throckley and Newburn - Six

* Kingston Park - Five

* Dinnington -Five

* Woolsington - Five

* Monkseaton - Five

* Fawdon South - Five

The data comes as infections and deaths continue to rise in the UK.

On Tuesday, one Covid-19 related death occured in the North East.

And against a worrying upswing in cases nationally, England's Chief Medical Officer tweeted: "We have, through the extraordinary efforts of the whole population, got Covid rates right down.

“They are now rising again especially in those aged 17 to 29.

“If we stop social distancing Covid comes back.

"We all need to protect others.”
