Revealed: Manchester City's most iconic away kit as voted for by fans

Manchester City fans have named the club’s 1984-86 striped black and red kit as the club’s most iconic away strip.

As proud partners of Shelter’s #NoHomeKit campaign, we asked City fans to have their say on the club’s most iconic away kits.

There was a runaway winner, with the 1984-86 kit, made by Umbro and sponsored by Philips, coming top with 43 per cent of the vote.

It’s easy to see why fans love the kit - it’s similar to the club’s 1969 FA Cup-winning strip and was also what City wore the season they won promotion from Division Two.

In second place on the vote was the 2009-11 third kit.

The minimalist Umbro kit was a nice throwback, with the Etihad sponsorship neatly tucked away under the club’s badge, rather than in the middle of the shirt.

With a black and red stripe going diagonally across the plain white shirt, it is a kit that has proved popular with fans, with 32% voting for it as their favourite away strip.

In third place on the list, with 13% of the vote, was the club’s 1998/99 striped yellow and blue kit, sponsored by Brother, which was worn in the legendary play-off final victory over Gillingham.

The club’s 1997/98 away kit - a blue, white and claret shirt - came fourth with 7% of the vote.

In fifth place with 5% of votes was the club’s whitee kit with claret pinstripes, worn between 1982 and 1984.

As part of Shelter’s #NoHomeKit campaign, fans have been encouraged to wear away shirts to games on Boxing Day or December 27.

The campaign is to raise funds and awareness for the housing emergency faced by thousands in this festive period.
