REVEALED: Hottest place in the North East - and it could get a lot hotter today

The Met Office has revealed which part of the North East was the hottest on Tuesday - and say temperatures could continue to rise.

A heatwave has gripped the UK this week and long-standing heat records could tumble.

On Tuesday, the hottest place in the North East was Durham city centre .

A Met Office weather station based in the city recorded a temperature at 27.8C.

But the weather forecasters have said temperatures could get even higher on Wednesday and Thursday.

The thermometer could even reach 30C in Newcastle and other areas further inland this week.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Areas away from the coast could see temperatures into the low 30s on Wednesday.

"Tomorrow, we could see it getting as hot as 29C in Newcastle and potentially 30C elsewhere in the North East.

"Further south, we think the UK record temperature of 38.5C could be beaten too."

It's been a turbulent 24 hours of weather for the North East.

Scorching temperatures have been broken up by storms during the night.

A yellow weather warning is in place for Thursday from 3pm until 4am on Friday for more storms.
