Reunion for former NFL star after being named new Houston Texans head coach

Former Houston Texans defensive leader DeMeco Ryans has returned to the franchise as the new head coach to become just the sixth man in charge of the franchise.

Ryans has been high on a number of wanted lists this summer, with a number of teams requesting an interview with him - with the Denver Broncos reportedly keen to offer him the job. However, he has instead opted to take the head coaching role with the Texans, as the franchise looks to rebuild.

Ryans has been the defensive coordinator for arguably the leagues best defence over the past two seasons, taking over from Robert Saleh who also left the team to take up a head coaching gig - with the New York Jets.

But Ryans is well known in Houston, after spending six years on the team as a star linebacker, where he was an All-Pro and Pro-Bowler in his time, whilst also winning defensive rookie of the year.

Ryans had been with the Niners since 2017 after retiring two years prior, working as a defensive quality control coach, before moving on to coach the linebackers.

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter tweeted: "Former 49ers’ defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans reached agreement today on a six-year deal, per sources. Texans have their new head coach."

In reaction to the news, Ryans former teammate and Texans legend, JJ Watt, reacted. He tweeted: "LET’S GOOOOOOO!!!!!! You want to reenergize and reignite the incredible Houston fan base, this is a hell of a start!! Cannot wait to see what Meco does. One of the best teammates & leaders I’ve ever been around."

Ryans becomes the third Texans head coach in as many years, after the firings of David Culley and Lovie Smith following turbulent seasons.

The Texans have struggled to replace former quarterback Deshaun Watson, who controversially left the team after his legal battles after he was accused of numerous sexual misconduct cases.

But the franchise will now have the second overall pick in a strong quarterback class, in which they are sure to select their new signal-caller.

Bryce Young (Alabama), Will Levis (Kentucky), CJ Stroud (Ohio State) and Anthony Richardson (Florida) are all seen as first round prospects, with the Texans likely having their pick of who they'd prefer - with the first pick falling to the Chicago Bears, who are unlikely to select a quarterback whilst having Justin Fields.
