Reuben Foster hangs up on Saints in favor of 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. _ Reuben Foster was minutes away from being drafted by the Saints.

With the 32nd pick on the horizon, the former Alabama linebacker received a call to prepare himself for life in the Big Easy.

"I get a call from the New Orleans Saints and they say, 'Are you in Louisiana, Baton Rouge?' " Foster said. "I said, 'No, sir. I'm in Miami, Florida.' 'Is your woman around?' I'm like, 'Hold up, why do you want to speak to my woman?' They said, 'Give her the phone.' "

Foster's girlfriend, a Baton Rogue native, was talking to the Saints when another call came through with a San Jose area code.

It was 49ers general manager John Lynch. He had informed Foster that San Francisco traded back into the first round from No. 34 and were going to select him with the 31st pick.

"I clicked over for the San Francisco 49ers and I picked up and said, 'Hello,' while the New Orleans Saints are still on the line," Foster said. "But, I wanted to be a 49er so bad. It was funny. It was crazy."

So what happened when Foster clicked back over to inform the Saints of what was happening?

Nothing. Foster had already ended the call.

"I hung up," the linebacker said during his introductory press conference at Levi's Stadium.
