Retirement of Andrew Luck give the Steelers one fewer AFC team to contend with

The news of former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s retirement took NFL fans by surprise on Saturday night. The news came first in a tweet from ESPN reporter Adam Schefter during the Colts preseason game. This was met with mixed responses by Colts fans and non-Colts fans alike. But what does this mean for the Pittsburgh Steelers?

First off, it essentially removes a playoff contender from the mix in the AFC. The Steelers are looking to get back to the playoffs after missing out last season, and a Colts team without Luck at quarterback doesn’t have the teeth in the competitive AFC.

But more specifically, the Week 9 matchup against the Colts becomes much more winnable. Pittsburgh doesn’t get many breathers on this schedule, but I will certainly take a Jacoby Brissett-led Indianapolis team over a Luck-led squad 10 times out of 10.

Having said that, I have to ask Steeler Nation: If Ben Roethlisberger had retired at 29 years old and the announcement came out during a preseason game, how would you feel? Let me know in the comments below.
