Retired tennis pros and legends to compete at Pickleball Slam

Chris Evert Tennis legend

On Sunday, February 4th, 2024, pickleball enthusiasts and sports fans alike will have the opportunity to tune in to ESPN for the highly anticipated Pickleball Slam 2. This thrilling event will be broadcasted in primetime on ESPN's flagship station, showcasing the fast-paced and exciting nature of the sport.

However, viewers expecting to see top-ranked players like Anna Leigh Waters or Ben Johns will be in for a surprise. The Pickleball Slam 2 will feature four retired tennis professionals, each with their own illustrious careers. These legendary players, John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, and Michael Chang, are set to participate in this made-for-TV fantasy camp held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Last year, the inaugural Pickleball Slam brought together these four renowned American tennis hall of famers. The matches, which included a combination of singles and doubles, showcased varying levels of skill from the former tennis stars. In 2023, Michael Chang stood out as the standout player, impressing with his performance on the court. Andy Roddick displayed solid skills, while Andre Agassi faced some challenges with his fitness and touch which is understandable considering he is in his mid-50s.

The organizers of Pickleball Slam took note of the previous year's event and made some adjustments for 2024. This year, they have decided to focus solely on mixed doubles matches, eliminating the singles matches that proved to be physically taxing on the retired players. The addition of two more tennis legends, Steffi Graff and Maria Sharapova, adds even more excitement to the tournament. Together, these legends possess an astounding 32 grand slam singles titles and a whopping 280 tournament titles throughout their careers.

To further enhance the competition, two players with strong ties to the professional pickleball world, Jack Sock and James Blake, have been added to the lineup. James Blake was an early investor in the Major League Pickleball (MLP) and currently co-owns the Milwaukee Mashers franchise. Jack Sock, who recently signed a 3-year deal with the Professional Pickleball Tour, has already made his mark in the sport, winning the Mixed Pro title in his professional debut and earning a Bronze in singles competition.

According to ESPN's press release, the match schedule for Pickleball Slam 2 is as follows:

- Agassi/Sock vs. McEnroe/Blake - Sharapova/Graff vs. Roddick/Chang - Agassi/Graff vs. McEnroe/Sharapova

As an observer, I predict that the team of Agassi and Sock will dominate in the first game against McEnroe and Blake. Game two will witness the net-play expertise of Jack Sock overpowering Maria Sharapova. However, the most intriguing match of the night will be the final one, as husband and wife duo Agassi and Graff face off against McEnroe and Sharapova, showcasing the challenges and dynamics of mixed doubles play.

While last year's participant, Andy Roddick, won't be competing this time around, fans can still enjoy his presence as he joins Chris Fowler in the broadcast booth. Roddick's expertise and charisma make him an excellent choice for providing insightful and entertaining commentary throughout the event.

The Pickleball Slam event also includes an amateur draw, allowing aspiring players to compete for a significant prize. Not only will they have the chance to showcase their skills, but they will also have the opportunity to interact with the legendary players at a celebrity dinner held the night before the event. The winners of the amateur draw will even get the incredible chance to play against a team of retired tennis champions.

While dedicated pickleball enthusiasts may prefer watching the top-level professionals in action, events like the Pickleball Slam featuring famous names play a crucial role. These events attract attention from individuals who may not have previously been interested in pickleball, serving as a great advertisement for the sport. This strategy is evident in the PPA's signing of celebrities like Genie Bouchard, who brings her massive Instagram following to the sport. The inclusion of well-known figures like actors and musicians, such as Jamie Foxx and Matthew Perry, further boosts pickleball's visibility and popularity.

As the sport continues to grow, let's embrace the opportunities brought forth by events like Pickleball Slam 2. It's an exciting time for pickleball lovers, and each new development only serves to enhance the game we all hold dear. So, whether you're a diehard fan or new to the sport, don't miss the chance to witness these legendary tennis champions battle it out on the pickleball court.
